WALL-E might be the most beautiful film on this list, and the first half-hour, with almost no dialogue, is some of the best storytelling I've seen. A lonely robot tidies up an Earth buried in rubbish, while humans drift around space on a cruise ship, staring at screens. It's a Pixar film, so the science is loose, but the ideas are sharp: a planet drowning in waste, and people so dependent on technology they've forgotten how to do anything themselves. One quibble - after generations in space, real humans wouldn't just get bigger. Without gravity, bones and muscles waste away, so they'd more likely be frail. But I'm not going to argue with a film that makes a robot falling in love so convincing.
